PPV Discussion: OOWF Boston Massacre PPV (May 27, 2012)
It's all fun and games until someone in your family gets audited. Then you start to wonder if the teabaggers - not to be confused with shitbaggers of Randall F. Orton fame - have a point. I admit it's a fleeting thought, immediately dismissed, once I realize I could have started this paragraph just as easily with it's all fun and games until someone in your family is denied healthcare because God doesn't like sex.
But you are not here to read me bitching about the mountain of receipts, bank statements, donations, and expenditures I've been slogging through to curtail the US government's wrath on my relatives, or about my "evolving" political views... you are here to read me slog through the particulars of my second, maybe third... realistically fourth favorite wrestling fed's upcoming pay-per-view. I used to work there which is why it's so high on my list.
You know the drill, kids:
From now until Sunday night at 8pm this thread is for Boston Massacre predictions and general discussion about the state of the upper-card/PPV-worthy direction of the OOWF.
Then, on Sunday night from 8pm till 11pm, you should use this thread for posting real-time results for the vast OO Universe of cheap leeches. I'd do it myself, except for the aforementioned wrath of US government thing.
So I'll leave it to others while I focus on that and save up my real-time clever/insightful observations so I can turn them into a recap later. I like to do one thing at a time and do it better than most people could ever DREAM of doing it! [You are welcome, ladies....]
And finally, after 11pm on Sunday, this is the place for your own post-show analyses and reactions...
It's like three, three, three threads in one!
Here's the line-up for Sunday's OOWF Boston Massacre pay-per-view:
OOWF World Heavyweight Title Match
LD Williams vs. Chris Evans
OOWF Intercontinental Title Fatal Four Way
Matt Folz vs. Danny Taylor vs. Ricky Soaring Eagle vs. Stank
OOWF World Tag Team Title Match - 2/3 Falls
Flyin Hawaiians vs. Texpress
OOWF Onslaught Championship Elimination Match
Ghosthead vs. Rabbit Mask vs. Crowing vs. El Lobo Sangriento
Awesome Bill From Dawsonville vs. Comrade Sharkoff
Phoenix Rising vs. Mai Muyo & Stan Fulton
JP Sparxx vs. Attitude Adjuster
A few thoughts:
The OOWF World Title match is obviously the canvas upon which the OOWF will paint the next chapter in the New Guard storyline. There is great potential here depending on how long the match runs and what kind of finish they go for. Actually, much as a clean finish would be nice, this would be a possible spot for shennanigans: instead of going for the LD Williams Clean Win, an appearance by one of the New Guard is likely and actually sensible if not obvious. But it might even serve a greater good, or bad your mileage may vary, in getting The New Guard back on track scoring the upset win over Williams here. The real payoff is still gonna come from whatever they do with the Chris Evans and The New Guard afterwards, and how that adds to (or doesn't add to) some actual sense of compelling drama...
The IC title match has a roster with a lot to prove... Stank has reluctantly been thrust back into babyfacedom after ridding the OOWF of Moosehead Jack and I say good on Lucas Mann even if he won’t agree. He should forget about Moose and concentrate on proving he can still be a viable champion over the other three in this match, though I expect him to be the last person to win. Ricky Soaring Eagle is definitely a contender (and a Folz-hater), and is my odds on favorite to win the match despite the shallowness of his I hate everybody feel my pain gimmick. He reminds me too much of that twatwad Moosehead Jack. So while I'm not really all that high on his gimmick I think Eagle is the favorite to win. Danny Taylor has floundered somewhat since ceasing to be the one true face of New Guard opposition. I don’t fault DDT on this rather the dwindling of the New Guard storyline. A win by Taylor here would be a pleasant surprise meaning the OOWF won’t do it. Still if Taylor were to capture the IC title it could reignite not only his singles run, but the New Guard story as well... and then there’s the IC Champ himself Matt Folz who has had some great matches but has failed to give his IC run the gravitas needed for him to keep carrying that belt which means the OOWF will keep the strap on him hoping we’ll conveniently forget what a lackluster run Folz is having. Still you have a bunch of guys who will actually be able to ratchet up a fun brawl even if there's just not a whole lot else for fans to latch onto outside of whatever highspots they do. Despite being fan favorites Stank and Taylor are role players right now and will likely not win the belt Sunday. Eagle probably needs it more to sustain his gimmick. RSE is my favorite to win though Folz will likely retain.
"Match of the Night" is basically the Onslaught Match's honor to lose. It’s got a loaded roster of performers who can flat out go. Ghosthead historically does not do well in multi-way matches, the vast majority of his losses being in matches featuring more than one opponent, where the outcome of the match has been taken out of his hands by its conclusion. Ghost tends to focus on one opponent or another, rather than on winning the match. That focus will seriously be put to the test given the history he has with Lobo. Unless they pull the trigger on amping up Rabbit Mask’s very heelish screw everybody I’m the best in the world shtick (which would be perfectly OK with me, as Rabbit has long since been proven to be very good talent.), I give a slight edge to Crowing in this one. Look for Ghosthead and Lobo to take each other out of the equation while Crowing steals a pin fall on Rabbit Mask, taking the win and the strap. No doubt Rabbit Mask will be pissed and end up dropping everyone on their heads claiming an immoral victory despite the match’s outcome.
Hey, look, after what seems like forever but more realistically 3 months, it's finally a Tag Title match between Texpress and The Flying Hawaiians on a pay-per-view! I have a feeling backstage, contractual issues had a LOT to do with screwing up the timing/pacing of this feud, with the hotshotting of the straps back to the Hawaiians when perhaps that should have been done at the PPV, which sucks... there's enough talent here for a mighty nice match, but things got so off-kilter that it's tough to say the fans will really be into it... a dead/disinterested crowd can suck the fun out of any match.... we'll see how it goes... it might be a good spot for Texpress to re-establish themselves with a ninth title win, and then then maybe Phoenix Rising can build up some interest/sympathy by chasing... and if the timing works out and Firewoman can settle her issues in the Wyatt Cox show – more on this later - it can provide the final bit of oomph for a Phoenix Rising title win down the road and sort of reset things in the Tag Team division with a strong set of teams competing and vying for a title opportunity.
As for the rest… meh.
Awesome Bill from Dawsonville has been fun and the comedy has sort of elevated his feud with Comrade Sharkoff, but something is off. Sharkoff really wants to be taken seriously despite both he and Bill playing caricatures. The matches have been pretty brutal which doesn’t jibe with the two of them being so good at laughs. Maybe I’m misreading everything and I’m not giving this feud a fair shake, but is that my fault or the OOWF’s? Hint; Not my fault.
Phoenix Rising versus Mai Muyo and Stan Fulton is part of the Wyatt Cox show. A bit of history – When I was GM of the OOWF I was approached by Cox’s agents with doing a crossover between us, and an Indy fed I can’t be bothered to remember, promoted by Cox. I said no because I was in the middle of managing yet another flare up of OOWF bullshittery, Moosehead Jack being a particular pain in my ass at the time. Anyway Cox responded to me personally via several phone conversations. It was then that I noticed a pattern of unhealthy fixations by Cox on Firewoman. I politely turned down Cox’s overtures never revealing my concern with his what I perceived to be his obsession with Mrs. Darling. Fast forward to now and JEEBUS CRISTO did I ever hit the nail on the head. I don’t know what the higher ups in Dayton Towers are doing working with this guy, but it will lead to nothing good for the OOWF. Cox is already using up a shit ton of the OOWF’s airtime and when you combine that with what most have come to call As the Darlings Turn it’s a recipe for what the fuck? Unless this leads to Cox managing the mostly silent New Guard, signs of which we’ve already seen in his dealings with Stan and Mai, I don’t understand the OOWF’s thinking in this. We’ll see how it plays out but I refuse to believe all that airtime was used just to set the stage in getting Cox’s tag team over.
What’s left? Oh… JP Sparxx and Attitude Adjuster…. right. If the OOWF doesn’t care why should I?
That's all I got. Not bad for 15 minutes worth of half-assed steam-of-consciousness rambling, eh? Probably a better job of "selling" the PPV than the OOWF bothered to do at Midweek Mayhem this week if you ask me.
Now, it's your turn...
